Row Length Vine Count

Count endpoint-inclusive geometric vine positions for unequal measured row lengths, spacings and end exclusions; no area-density alias, field planting recommendation or rounding fractional plants.

Description

Plant positions are discrete points along a measured row.

Plant positions are discrete points along a measured row. End exclusions and inclusive endpoints change the count.

Count endpoint-inclusive geometric vine positions for unequal measured row lengths, spacings and end exclusions; no area-density alias, field planting recommendation or rounding fractional plants.

When to use Row Length Vine Count

Use this tool to count endpoint-inclusive geometric vine positions for unequal measured row lengths, spacings and end exclusions; no area-density alias, field planting recommendation or rounding fractional plants.

Prepare vineyard measurements, dates or block records for the intended growing period. Keep weights, counts and weather observations in the stated units.

How to use Row Length Vine Count and understand its results

  1. Prepare vineyard measurements, dates or block records for the intended growing period. Keep weights, counts and weather observations in the stated units.
  2. Enter rowLengthsM, inRowVineSpacingsM, startEndInsetsM using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read vinePositionsByRowCounts, totalGeometricVinePositions. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
rowLengthsMRow lengths mlist of numberRequired
inRowVineSpacingsMIn row vine spacings mlist of numberRequired
startEndInsetsMStart end insets mlist of list of numberRequired

Align nonnegative lengths, positive spacings and two nonnegative insets per row. A negative usable span gives zero; exactly zero span permits one position. Sum safely countable row totals.1

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

positions = max(0,floor((length − start inset − end inset)/spacing)+1)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

This is a geometric count, not an area-density estimate or planting recommendation.

Numbers and computed results must be finite; overflow produces an error. Matrices are limited to 128 rows and 128 entries per row; other numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Scion Stick Bud Count Tool: Screen usable scion bud positions under caller internode/endpoint geometry and independently measured viability; expected viable count is fractional, not observed buds or graft-grade assurance. For a complementary task, use Buds Per Hectare Total: Expand measured retained fruit-bud loading through actual block vine inventories/areas and caller bud-burst fractions; distinguishes per-vine Guyot ledger from per-area expected shoots, not a density ideal.
