Connect Tool.io tools into a locally executed workflow, pass outputs into later inputs, and add conversion tools when their formats differ.
The Tool Chain Builder combines several small tools into one repeatable workflow. The result from one tool can become the input of the next, while each step remains visible and adjustable. A chain can be as simple as generating a value and encoding it, or it can contain several calculations and conversions.
Connections are intentionally permissive. Tool.io does not decide that two ideas are semantically sensible on the user's behalf. When data types or formats differ, the editor can recommend a connector tool, but that recommendation is an aid rather than a restriction.
When to use a tool chain
Use a chain when you would otherwise copy a result from one Tool.io page and paste it into another. It is especially useful for repeated calculations because you can change an early value and run the complete sequence again while inspecting each intermediate result.
- Generate data and immediately encode, format, or compare it
- Convert an output into the unit or representation expected by a later tool
- Inspect intermediate values while building a longer calculation
- Reuse the same ordered workflow with different manual inputs
- Experiment with how changing an early value affects the final result
How the Chain tool works
Add tools in the order you want them to run. For each input, either enter a value yourself or choose a result produced by an earlier step. The output preview shows the result of the last tool, while every step also shows its own inputs and results so you can find where an unexpected value began.
If two steps expect different units or formats, Tool.io can suggest a conversion tool between them. For example, a length in feet may need to be converted before a tool that expects meters. The conversion appears as its own visible step, so you can inspect or replace it rather than accepting a hidden change.
Manual and live execution
- Manual mode
- The chain waits for an explicit run, which is useful while several nodes and connections are being edited.
- Live mode
- The chain recalculates after its document changes and is used for embedded examples whose visible output should follow their configured inputs.
Limitations and safeguards
Tool.io lets you combine any tools, but a chain that runs is not automatically a chain that makes sense. A temperature can be passed into an interest-rate field because both are numbers, and text can reach a tool in an unexpected syntax. Check the meaning, units, and intermediate result of every step when accuracy matters.
- A step can currently use results only from tools placed before it.
- A connector recommendation does not prove that the overall workflow is semantically correct.
- Interactive tools and tools that fetch live data may not behave like simple calculations inside a chain.
- The current builder does not provide account synchronization, collaborative editing, or a permanent workflow library.
- A saved chain may need review if one of its tools changes in a future Tool.io update.
