Mat Board Window Reveal Width

Compare explicit centered image and mat-window widths, preserving a larger window as negative overlap.

Description

Calculate equal covered width on each side of a mat-board window.

Artwork dimensions depend on whether a measurement describes the image, support, window, overlap or reserved edge. Linear enlargement multiplies area by the square and volume by the cube of the scale. A signed clearance or width adjustment retains useful direction information, while a nominal geometric fit still needs material, production and installation context.

Calculate equal covered width on each side of a mat-board window.

When to use this tool

Use Mat Board Window Reveal Width when you already have imageWidth, windowWidth and need to calculate equal covered width on each side of a mat-board window.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter imageWidth, windowWidth. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read coveredWidthEachSide. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative image/window widths; return (imageWidth-windowWidth)/2.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
imageWidthImage WidthRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
windowWidthWindow WidthRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
coveredWidthEachSide(imageWidth-windowWidth)/2; negative for a window wider than the image.Required. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Assumes a centered window; a negative result is an oversize-window margin, not proof of acceptable mounting.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check an actual dimensioned layout or calibrated test piece for mounting and production. Use a geometric model for full enlargement or overlap accounting, and physical drawdowns or material tests when thickness behavior matters.
