Canvas Stretcher Inset Clearance

Calculate explicit equal-side canvas inset relative to a centered stretcher width without selecting conservation or framing methods.

Description

Calculate an equal side inset between canvas and stretcher widths.

Artwork dimensions depend on whether a measurement describes the image, support, window, overlap or reserved edge. Linear enlargement multiplies area by the square and volume by the cube of the scale. A signed clearance or width adjustment retains useful direction information, while a nominal geometric fit still needs material, production and installation context.

Calculate an equal side inset between canvas and stretcher widths.

When to use this tool

Use Canvas Stretcher Inset Clearance when you already have canvasWidth, stretcherWidth and need to calculate an equal side inset between canvas and stretcher widths.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter canvasWidth, stretcherWidth. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read equalSideInset. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative widths; return (canvasWidth-stretcherWidth)/2.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
canvasWidthCanvas WidthRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
stretcherWidthStretcher WidthRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Assumes centered geometry; negative clearance is retained and material stretch or fastening is not modeled.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check an actual dimensioned layout or calibrated test piece for mounting and production. Use a geometric model for full enlargement or overlap accounting, and physical drawdowns or material tests when thickness behavior matters.
