Description

Integrate one supplied bench-flow interval with a trapezoidal rule, retaining sign.

A research diary or bench measurement uses a defined observation window, clock, unit, and reference level. Missing timing, incomplete collection, and unverified measurements affect how a result can be interpreted. Record arithmetic and signal terms describe supplied data without establishing clinical status.

Integrate one supplied bench-flow interval with a trapezoidal rule, retaining sign.

When to use this tool

Use Flow Volume Integration Step when you need a research-record or bench calculation with already supplied measurements, units, and observation boundaries.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter firstFlow, secondFlow, elapsed. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read volumeIncrement. Use the output convention below.

Return volumeIncrement=(firstFlow/2+secondFlow/2)*elapsed with nonnegative elapsed.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
firstFlowFirst FlowRequired. Finite number.
secondFlowSecond FlowRequired. Finite number.
elapsedElapsedRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.

Limitations and assumptions

  • This is one trapezoidal panel using a half-sum form to reduce intermediate addition overflow. Flow and elapsed units must match; the tool does not process a whole trace, identify artifacts, or interpret clinical flow.
  • The field tables state structural bounds; the mechanics also specify cross-field constraints. Malformed inputs and unsupported domains cause errors. A successful false flag, empty branch value, or zero placeholder has the meaning stated above and is distinct from an input error.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Signed zero is exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use an appropriately validated measurement and analysis method for clinical interpretation. Verify diary completeness, clock conventions, and measurement units before combining these terms into a research summary.
