Refund Delay

Estimate simple interest from caller-supplied refund delay and interest assumptions.

Description

A refund-delay model accrues simple interest after a supplied interest-free period.

A refund-delay model accrues simple interest after a supplied interest-free period. It uses a fixed 365-day denominator.1

Estimate simple interest from caller-supplied refund delay and interest assumptions.

When to use Refund Delay

Use this tool to estimate simple interest from caller-supplied refund delay and interest assumptions.

Choose the specific arithmetic or checklist scenario and establish its input amounts, dates, rates and criteria from the applicable records. Keep currencies, periods and jurisdictions consistent; review the tool-specific assumptions before interpreting the result.

How to use Refund Delay and understand its results

  1. Choose the specific arithmetic or checklist scenario and establish its input amounts, dates, rates and criteria from the applicable records. Keep currencies, periods and jurisdictions consistent; review the tool-specific assumptions before interpreting the result.
  2. Enter delayDays, interestFreeDays, refundAmount, annualInterestRatePercent using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read interestBearingDays, estimatedSimpleInterest, estimatedRefundWithInterest. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
delayDaysRefund delay (days)integer; minimum: 0Required
interestFreeDaysInterest-free period (days)integer; minimum: 0Required
refundAmountRefund amountnumber; minimum: 0Required
annualInterestRatePercentAnnual interest rate (%)number; minimum: 0Required

Enter nonnegative refund/rate and nonnegative integer delay/free days. Return interest-bearing days, simple interest and refund plus interest.

interestDays=max(0,delayDays−freeDays); interest=refund×annualRate/100×interestDays/365

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Output fieldMeaningValue type
interestBearingDaysInterest-bearing delay (days)integer; minimum: 0
estimatedSimpleInterestEstimated simple interestnumber; minimum: 0
estimatedRefundWithInterestEstimated refund with interestnumber; minimum: 0

Limitations and assumptions

This does not track actual refund status or establish interest entitlement. Changing rates, compounding and leap-year-specific conventions are not implemented.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Amended-Return Delay: Measure amended-return processing delay against a caller-supplied expectation. For a complementary task, use Summons Response Window: Calculate a tax-summons response deadline from a caller-supplied window.
