Summons Response Window

Calculate a tax-summons response deadline from a caller-supplied window.

Description

A summons response window adds a supplied number of calendar days to a notice date.

A summons response window adds a supplied number of calendar days to a notice date. A due-date calculation depends on the actual notice and applicable counting rules.1

Calculate a tax-summons response deadline from a caller-supplied window.

When to use Summons Response Window

Use this tool to calculate a tax-summons response deadline from a caller-supplied window.

Choose the specific arithmetic or checklist scenario and establish its input amounts, dates, rates and criteria from the applicable records. Keep currencies, periods and jurisdictions consistent; review the tool-specific assumptions before interpreting the result.

How to use Summons Response Window and understand its results

  1. Choose the specific arithmetic or checklist scenario and establish its input amounts, dates, rates and criteria from the applicable records. Keep currencies, periods and jurisdictions consistent; review the tool-specific assumptions before interpreting the result.
  2. Enter serviceDate, responseDays, asOfDate using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read responseDeadline, daysRemaining, overdue. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

serviceDateSummons service datestringRequired
responseDaysResponse window (days)integer; minimum: 0Required
asOfDateAs-of datestringRequired

Enter service/as-of dates as YYYY-MM-DD and a nonnegative integer response period. Parse midnight UTC, add calendar days to service and return deadline, signed days remaining and overdue only for a negative remainder.

deadline=noticeDate+responseDays; daysRemaining=ceil((deadline−asOf)/86400000)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No weekend, holiday, service-date or legal extension rule is applied. Some impossible calendar days can normalize in JavaScript Date; verify actual dates externally.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Extremely large text inputs are rejected. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use CDP Appeal Window: Check a collection appeal filing date against a caller-supplied window. For a complementary task, use Deadline Business-Day Shift: Move a nominal deadline forward past weekends and caller-supplied nonbusiness dates.
