Description
Calculate nominal soil carbon mass per area for a supplied layer.
Farm sustainability accounting needs explicit resource units, system boundaries, reference periods and source versions. A reused-water or renewable-energy share uses a declared total, while a soil carbon stock combines depth, bulk density and carbon mass fraction. Local quantities do not by themselves establish environmental benefit, additionality, certification or comparable life-cycle impacts.
Calculate nominal soil carbon mass per area for a supplied layer.
When to use this tool
Use Soil Carbon Depth Mass Factor when you already have bulkDensityKilogramsPerCubicMeter, depthMeters, carbonMassFraction and need to calculate nominal soil carbon mass per area for a supplied layer.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter bulkDensityKilogramsPerCubicMeter, depthMeters, carbonMassFraction. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read carbonKilogramsPerSquareMeter. Use the output convention below.
Require nonnegative bulk density in kg/m³ and depth in m, plus carbonMassFraction in [0,1]; return density*depth*fraction in kg/m².1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| bulkDensityKilogramsPerCubicMeter | Bulk Density Kilograms Per Cubic Meter | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| depthMeters | Depth Meters | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| carbonMassFraction | Carbon mass/dry soil mass as a decimal fraction; must match the density basis. | Required. Finite number; minimum 0; maximum 1. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| carbonKilogramsPerSquareMeter | Nominal uniform layer carbon stock per area, not stock change or a carbon credit. | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Assumes a uniform layer and consistent dry-mass/fine-earth basis; no coarse-fragment correction, baseline change, carbon credit or soil measurement is inferred.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use a documented farm inventory with matched system boundaries and reference periods for broader sustainability analysis. For soil carbon, retain the original sampling depth, density, carbon assay and coarse-fragment basis rather than interpreting one layer product as a verified stock change.
