Zscore Zero Spread Policy Tool

Apply a supplied center and spread to one z-score, with an explicit zero-spread policy. When undefined, the numeric zero is a sentinel identified by defined=false.

Description

At zero spread reject or return defined false and zscore zero; otherwise calculate (value - center)/spread.

A statistic summarizes data under chosen conventions for missing values, ties, spread, and denominators. A component calculation uses the supplied values; it does not check whether the data collection or statistical model is appropriate.

At zero spread reject or return defined false and zscore zero; otherwise calculate (value - center)/spread.

When to use this tool

Use Zscore Zero Spread Policy when you need one stated statistical component with explicit handling of boundary cases.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter value, center, spread, zeroPolicy. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read defined, zscore. Inspect defined before interpreting the associated values.

Require nonnegative spread and a zeroPolicy of reject or report-undefined. At zero spread reject or return defined false and zscore zero; otherwise calculate (value - center)/spread.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
valueNumeric value on the basis stated in the calculation above.Required. Finite number.
centerCenterRequired. Finite number.
spreadNonnegative spread in the same unit as value and center; zero handling follows zeroPolicy.Required. Finite number.
zeroPolicyZero PolicyRequired. Text; one of "reject", "report-undefined"; maximum UTF-16 length 8192.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
definedWhether the accompanying value has an available denominator; inspect before using placeholders.Required. Boolean.
zscoreZscoreRequired. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • The center and spread are supplied rather than estimated; undefined zero must not be interpreted as a measured average-position score.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Inspect the data distribution and the full estimation method before drawing a statistical conclusion.
