Sample Variance Deviation Term Tool

Return one observation's squared-deviation contribution to sample variance using the supplied mean and n-1 denominator.

Description

Require safe-integer sampleSize at least two and return (observation - sampleMean)²/(sampleSize - 1).

A statistic summarizes data under chosen conventions for missing values, ties, spread, and denominators. A component calculation uses the supplied values; it does not check whether the data collection or statistical model is appropriate.

Require safe-integer sampleSize at least two and return (observation - sampleMean)²/(sampleSize - 1).

When to use this tool

Use Sample Variance Deviation Term when you need one stated statistical component with explicit handling of boundary cases.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter observation, sampleMean, sampleSize. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read contribution. Use the output convention below.

Require safe-integer sampleSize at least two and return (observation - sampleMean)²/(sampleSize - 1).1

Limitations and assumptions

  • This is one sample-variance contribution in squared measurement units; mean, sample size, and all other observations must be established separately.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
