Signed Reference Deviation Scalar Tool

Scale a signed deviation from an explicit reference by a positive supplied scale.

Description

Require positive scale and return (value - reference)/scale as deviation.

A statistic summarizes data under chosen conventions for missing values, ties, spread, and denominators. A component calculation uses the supplied values; it does not check whether the data collection or statistical model is appropriate.

Require positive scale and return (value - reference)/scale as deviation.

When to use this tool

Use Signed Reference Deviation Scalar when you need one stated statistical component with explicit handling of boundary cases.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter value, reference, scale. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read deviation. Use the output convention below.

Require positive scale and return (value - reference)/scale as deviation.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
valueNumeric value on the basis stated in the calculation above.Required. Finite number.
referenceSupplied reference in the documented record convention.Required. Finite number.
scaleScaleRequired. Finite number; strictly above 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
deviationDeviationRequired. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Scale and reference are supplied; the result is not automatically a standard-normal z score, significance test, or uncertainty estimate.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Inspect the data distribution and the full estimation method before drawing a statistical conclusion.
