Degrees Freedom Constraint Count Tool

Subtract a caller-supplied count of independent linear constraints from the observation dimension; independence is assumed, not tested.

Description

Subtract independentConstraintCount from observationCount, with nonnegative safe-integer constraints no greater than observations.

A statistic summarizes data under chosen conventions for missing values, ties, spread, and denominators. A component calculation uses the supplied values; it does not check whether the data collection or statistical model is appropriate.

When to use this tool

Use Degrees Freedom Constraint Count when you need one stated statistical component with explicit handling of boundary cases.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter observationCount, independentConstraintCount. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read degreesOfFreedom. Use the output convention below.

Limitations and assumptions

  • The independence and applicability of constraints are supplied; this count identity does not establish a model's effective degrees of freedom.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods
