Fluency Disfluency Duration

Normalize an explicitly marked disfluency duration to observed sample time without evaluating fluency.

Description

Calculate marked disfluency time as a fraction of a speech sample.

Speech records use different observational units: words, morphemes, tokens, time spans, frequency and symbol-code versions. A duration share differs from a count-based speech measure, and a transcription remains a supplied annotation. Recorded practice completion and communication preferences need their original assessment and consent context before clinical interpretation.

Calculate marked disfluency time as a fraction of a speech sample.

When to use this tool

Use Fluency Disfluency Duration when you already have sampleDurationSeconds, markedDisfluencySeconds and need to calculate marked disfluency time as a fraction of a speech sample.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter sampleDurationSeconds, markedDisfluencySeconds. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read markedFraction, otherSeconds. Use the output convention below.

Require sampleDurationSeconds>0 and marked seconds within [0,sample]; return marked/sample and sample-marked.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
sampleDurationSecondsSample Duration SecondsRequired. Finite number; strictly above 0.
markedDisfluencySecondsMarked Disfluency SecondsRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
markedFractionMarked disfluency seconds/sample seconds; not a syllable-count percentage.Required. Finite number.
otherSecondsOther SecondsRequired. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • The denominator is sample duration, not syllables or speaking time unless the source defines it so; no fluency diagnosis is made.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the original audio, transcription and annotation manual when counts or intervals need verification. Apply a complete instrument's stated scoring method for an assessment; retain source-defined word, morpheme, time and symbol conventions throughout.
