Mastery Scale Mapper

Map an assessment score onto a caller-defined standards-based mastery scale.

Description

A mastery scale maps a numeric score to the highest attained lower bound.

A mastery scale maps a numeric score to the highest attained lower bound. The next-bound distance helps interpret scores below the top mapped level.1

Map an assessment score onto a caller-defined standards-based mastery scale.

When to use Mastery Scale Mapper

Use this tool to map an assessment score onto a caller-defined standards-based mastery scale.

Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.

How to use Mastery Scale Mapper and understand its results

  1. Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.
  2. Enter score, minimumScores, levelLabels using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read level, distanceToNext. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

Enter nonempty strictly increasing finite cutoffs and aligned distinct exact labels with a finite score. Reject scores below the first cutoff; return mapped label and next-level distance.

level=last i with score≥minimumScores_i; distance=nextMinimum−score, or0 at top

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Labels and thresholds are supplied. The top-level zero distance is a placeholder because no next level exists, not evidence that a ceiling score was reached.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Readiness Tier Assignments: Assign differentiated activity tiers using current readiness scores. For a complementary task, use Mastery Retry Tracker: Classify student mastery, remaining retry eligibility, and exhausted attempts.
