Mastery Retry Tracker

Classify student mastery, remaining retry eligibility, and exhausted attempts.

Description

A retry tracker separates attained mastery from remaining attempt eligibility.

A retry tracker separates attained mastery from remaining attempt eligibility. Learners below the target are classified by their used-attempt count.1

Classify student mastery, remaining retry eligibility, and exhausted attempts.

When to use Mastery Retry Tracker

Use this tool to classify student mastery, remaining retry eligibility, and exhausted attempts.

Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.

How to use Mastery Retry Tracker and understand its results

  1. Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.
  2. Enter studentIds, latestScores, masteryScore, attemptsUsed, maximumAttempts using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read masteredIds, retryEligibleIds, reviewRequiredIds. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
studentIdsStudent idslist of stringRequired
latestScoresLatest scoreslist of numberRequired
masteryScoreMastery scorenumberRequired
attemptsUsedAttempts usedlist of numberRequired
maximumAttemptsMaximum attemptsnumberRequired

Enter nonempty unique exact learner IDs, aligned finite scores, attempts from one through a positive safe-integer maximum and finite mastery target. Return three lists in input order.

mastered=score≥target; retry=score<target AND used<maximum; review=score<target AND used≥maximum

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Only latest scores are used. Attempt history, alternative evidence and actual support decisions are not evaluated.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Mastery Scale Mapper: Map an assessment score onto a caller-defined standards-based mastery scale. For a complementary task, use Completion Problem Transition: Gate a completion-problem fade by observed student success.
