Grade Weight Validator
Check whether gradebook category weights sum to 100% within tolerance.
Description
Grade-category weighting requires a coherent total before scores can be combined.
Grade-category weighting requires a coherent total before scores can be combined. A tolerance accommodates a chosen amount of rounding discrepancy around 100%.1
Check whether gradebook category weights sum to 100% within tolerance.
When to use Grade Weight Validator
Use this tool to check whether gradebook category weights sum to 100% within tolerance.
Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.
How to use Grade Weight Validator and understand its results
- Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.
- Enter categoryNames, categoryWeightsPercent, tolerancePercent using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read totalWeightPercent, deviationPercent, valid. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| categoryNames | Category names | list of string | Required |
| categoryWeightsPercent | Category weights percent | list of number | Required |
| tolerancePercent | Tolerance percent | number | Required |
Enter nonempty distinct exact category names, aligned weights in 0–100 and nonnegative tolerance in percentage points. Return total, signed deviation and inclusive validity flag.
deviation=Σweights−100; valid=|deviation|≤tolerance Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| totalWeightPercent | Total weight percent | number |
| deviationPercent | Deviation percent | number |
| valid | Valid | boolean |

} Limitations and assumptions
The tool does not normalize weights, calculate grades or assess fairness. A large supplied tolerance permits a correspondingly large deviation.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Discussion Rubric Score: Score asynchronous discussion criteria and flag low-scoring rubric dimensions. For a complementary task, use Assessment Blueprint Coverage: Audit test-item counts against objectives and a caller-selected coverage minimum.
