Pulp Density
Calculate ideal mixture density and solids volume fraction with additive component volumes; gas entrainment and volume contraction are excluded.
Description
A slurry specified by solids mass fraction has an additive specific-volume relation.
A slurry specified by solids mass fraction has an additive specific-volume relation. Mass fraction and volume fraction differ when component densities differ.
The tool returns pulpDensityKgPerM3 (pulp density kg per m3); solidVolumeFraction (solid volume fraction). Input measurements and model parameters are supplied by the caller; the tool computes the stated summary rather than acquiring those measurements.
When to use Pulp Density
Use Pulp Density when you already have solidMassFraction, solidDensityKgPerM3, liquidDensityKgPerM3 and want pulpDensityKgPerM3, solidVolumeFraction. This is useful for checking a supplied calculation, documenting a measurement convention, or comparing observations prepared on the same basis.
How to use Pulp Density and understand its results
- Enter solidMassFraction, solidDensityKgPerM3, liquidDensityKgPerM3 using the field table below. Match the units, ordering and data boundaries described in the calculation.
- Run the tool after checking the stated bounds and matching paired observations or categories. A malformed request gives a tool error rather than a usable measurement.
- Read pulpDensityKgPerM3, solidVolumeFraction. Use the calculation and interpretation below to distinguish amounts, ratios, signs and decision flags where applicable.
- Review the supplied parameters and assumptions before using the result in a report or comparing it with another observation.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type and bounds | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| solidMassFraction | Solid mass fraction | number | Required |
| solidDensityKgPerM3 | Solid density kg per m3 | number | Required |
| liquidDensityKgPerM3 | Liquid density kg per m3 | number | Required |
Use positive solid and liquid densities and mass fraction in [0,1]. Also convert solids to a volume fraction using the same total volume.
density = 1/(massFraction/solidDensity+(1−massFraction)/liquidDensity) The symbols refer to the supplied quantities or generated values described above; unit conversions and comparison boundaries follow the stated implementation.

The model assumes additive volumes and two phases. It excludes entrained gas, solution-density changes and particle packing effects.
Numerical inputs must be finite. The tool checks its declared input shape and calculation constraints; those checks do not verify the quality, calibration or representativeness of the supplied observations.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Pulp Percent Solids From Density: Invert additive-volume pulp density to solid mass percent/volume fraction; measured density must lie between distinct component densities. Pulp Solid Percentage: Express pulp solid mass percent and water/solid ratio from dry solid and water masses; not a volumetric solid fraction.
