Microscope Grid Edge Share Tool

Count edge cells on an explicit rectangular research grid, with a distinct-corner inclusion policy.

Description

Compute rows × columns and subtract the interior rectangle for the boundary count using exact integers.

A rectangular cell grid has interior, boundary, and corner cells. Degenerate one-row or one-column grids need unique-corner counting rather than a fixed four-corner assumption.

Compute rows × columns and subtract the interior rectangle for the boundary count using exact integers.

When to use this tool

Use Microscope Grid Edge Share when you need an exact cell-boundary count and share.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter rows, columns, includeCorners. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read totalCellsDecimal, boundaryCellsDecimal, share. Use the output convention below.

Compute rows × columns and subtract the interior rectangle for the boundary count using exact integers. Optionally remove unique corner cells, accounting for one-row or one-column grids; return decimal counts and a numeric share.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • This is a cell-grid boundary convention, not a rule for counting objects touching microscopy grid lines.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Inspect the actual sampling geometry before using a cell-count share as an area or object-count proportion.
