Histogram Open Bucket Count Tool

Count finite histogram buckets plus the one conventional unbounded final bucket from strictly increasing finite bounds.

Description

Return their count as finiteBuckets and one additional open bucket.

A histogram partitions a numeric range into finite buckets and possibly an open-ended bucket. Exposure shares are different from event counts and probability density.

Return their count as finiteBuckets and one additional open bucket.

When to use this tool

Use Histogram Open Bucket Count when you need a bucket-layout or exposure-denominator check.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter upperBounds. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read openBuckets, finiteBuckets. Use the output convention below.

Require strictly increasing finite upperBounds. Return their count as finiteBuckets and one additional open bucket.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • No observations or counts are assigned; bucket inclusivity and a complete histogram must be handled separately.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Validate bucket ordering and boundary conventions and combine exposures with the appropriate observed counts.
