Screen Time Character Fraction Tool

Compute a character's observed screen-time fraction under a caller-supplied coding convention, allowing overlap between different characters.

Description

Require characterSeconds between zero and positive analyzedSeconds and divide for fraction.

Media proportions depend on whether the denominator includes excluded material, inaudible markers, duplicated roles, or only eligible duration. These choices answer different analytical questions.

Require characterSeconds between zero and positive analyzedSeconds and divide for fraction.

When to use this tool

Use Screen Time Character Fraction when you need a media-study proportion with an explicit counting basis.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter characterSeconds, analyzedSeconds. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read fraction. Use the output convention below.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use compatible timing and an explicit screen-presence definition; shared appearances, annotation uncertainty, and representational meaning are not inferred.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Review the coding protocol and source material, and report excluded or uncertain annotations separately.
