Nanorod Heating Estimate

Estimate adiabatic sample heating from absorbed nanorod illumination.

Description

An adiabatic heating estimate allocates absorbed optical energy to a supplied sample heat capacity.

An adiabatic heating estimate allocates absorbed optical energy to a supplied sample heat capacity. All absorbed energy is retained in this model.1

Estimate adiabatic sample heating from absorbed nanorod illumination.

When to use Nanorod Heating Estimate

Use this tool to estimate adiabatic sample heating from absorbed nanorod illumination.

Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.

How to use Nanorod Heating Estimate and understand its results

  1. Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
  2. Enter incidentPowerWatts, absorbedFraction, heatingSeconds, sampleMassGrams, specificHeatJPerGramK using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read absorbedEnergyJoules, adiabaticTemperatureRiseKelvin. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
incidentPowerWattsIncident optical power (W)number; minimum: 0Required
absorbedFractionAbsorbed power fractionnumber; minimum: 0; maximum: 1Required
heatingSecondsHeating duration (s)number; minimum: 0Required
sampleMassGramsHeated sample mass (g)number; minimum: 0Required
specificHeatJPerGramKSample specific heat (J/(g·K))number; minimum: 0Required

Enter nonnegative power/time, absorption fraction 0–1 and positive mass and J/(g·K) heat capacity. Return absorbed joules and temperature rise.

energy=power×absorbedFraction×time; ΔT=energy/(mass_g×specificHeat)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Heat loss, phase changes, spatial gradients and nanorod-specific optical response are excluded.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Photothermal Diffusivity: Infer thermal diffusivity from photothermal-wave phase lag at a known offset. For a complementary task, use Diode-Stack Heat Flux: Calculate diode-stack waste heat and cooled-footprint heat flux.
