Diode-Stack Heat Flux
Calculate diode-stack waste heat and cooled-footprint heat flux.
Description
Waste-heat budgeting subtracts optical output from electrical input and distributes the remainder across cooled area.
Waste-heat budgeting subtracts optical output from electrical input and distributes the remainder across cooled area. The arithmetic does not enforce energy consistency.1
Calculate diode-stack waste heat and cooled-footprint heat flux.
When to use Diode-Stack Heat Flux
Use this tool to calculate diode-stack waste heat and cooled-footprint heat flux.
Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
How to use Diode-Stack Heat Flux and understand its results
- Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
- Enter electricalInputWatts, opticalOutputWatts, cooledFootprintSquareMeters using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read wasteHeatWatts, heatFluxWattsPerSquareMeter. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| electricalInputWatts | Electrical input power (W) | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
| opticalOutputWatts | Optical output power (W) | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
| cooledFootprintSquareMeters | Cooled footprint (m²) | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
Enter nonnegative powers and positive footprint m². Return signed watts and W/m²; optical output above electrical input yields negative results.
heat=electrical−optical; flux=heat/area Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| wasteHeatWatts | Waste heat (W) | number |
| heatFluxWattsPerSquareMeter | Heat flux (W/m²) | number |

No thermal resistance, cooling temperature or transient heating is calculated.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use THz Cooling Margin: Compare a THz laser operating temperature with a supplied cooling limit. For a complementary task, use Nanorod Heating Estimate: Estimate adiabatic sample heating from absorbed nanorod illumination.
