Smog Grade Level Check Calculator
SMOG grade proxy with independently counted three-or-more-syllable words and explicit observed sample length; flags short sample, not reading-age diagnosis or syntax/word segmentation. Caller independently verifies context, evidence, reference edition and applicability; not factual authenticity, current legal advice or publication clearance.
Description
SMOG is a readability proxy based on counts of polysyllabic words and sentences.
SMOG is a readability proxy based on counts of polysyllabic words and sentences.1
It estimates text difficulty under a sampling convention rather than measuring an individual reader's comprehension.
When to use Smog Grade Level Check Calculator
Use this tool to calculate or review the supplied observations under the stated rules. Establish the reviewed evidence, house style or applicable jurisdiction and dated reference.
How to use Smog Grade Level Check Calculator and understand its results
- Establish the reviewed evidence, house style or applicable jurisdiction and dated reference.
- Enter independentlyCountedPolysyllabicWords, observedSampleSentenceCount, using the field meanings and rules below, then run the tool.
- Read smogGradeProxy, thirtySentenceSampleFloorReached, using the output meanings and calculation rules below.
- Correct any reported input issue and run again. Before using a successful result, check the stated units, signs, reference scope and observation coverage.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| independentlyCountedPolysyllabicWords | Independently counted polysyllabic words | number | Required |
| observedSampleSentenceCount | Observed sample sentence count | number | Required |
Use a nonnegative safe-integer polysyllabic-word count and a positive safe-integer sentence count. Evaluate the continuous SMOG formula and report whether the sample has at least thirty sentences. Zero polysyllables yields 3.1291; the score is not rounded to an integer grade.
SMOG=1.043×sqrt(polysyllables×30/sentences)+3.1291; adequateSample=(sentences≥30) Use the matching field units and the exact boundary, ordering and reference rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| smogGradeProxy | Smog grade proxy | number |
| thirtySentenceSampleFloorReached | Thirty sentence sample floor reached | boolean |

Syllable counts and sentence segmentation are independently supplied. Short samples are flagged rather than rejected, and the result is a readability proxy without a comprehension guarantee.
Missing required fields, unknown fields, wrong types and violated rules return input issues. Numeric values and outputs must be finite.
Alternative or Complementary methods
For a related step, use Gunning Fog Index Bulk Calculation: The Gunning Fog index combines sentence length and the proportion of eligible complex words. For a complementary comparison, use Passive Voice Percent Sentences Detector: Passive-voice prevalence is a share of sentences already analyzed for grammatical voice.
