Gunning Fog Index Bulk Calculation
Bulk exposure-pooled Fog 0.4(words/sentences+100 eligible complex/words); caller independently applies syllable/proper-name/suffix exclusions, not average document indices or comprehension guarantee. Caller independently verifies context, evidence, reference edition and applicability; not factual authenticity, current legal advice or publication clearance.
Description
The Gunning Fog index combines sentence length and the proportion of eligible complex words.
The Gunning Fog index combines sentence length and the proportion of eligible complex words.1
For multiple documents, pooling the counts gives a different result from averaging document scores.
When to use Gunning Fog Index Bulk Calculation
Use this tool to calculate or review the supplied observations under the stated rules. Establish the reviewed evidence, house style or applicable jurisdiction and dated reference.
How to use Gunning Fog Index Bulk Calculation and understand its results
- Establish the reviewed evidence, house style or applicable jurisdiction and dated reference.
- Enter observedDocumentWords, observedDocumentSentenceCounts, independentlyFogEligibleComplexWordCounts, using the field meanings and rules below, then run the tool.
- Read pooledGunningFogIndex, individualDocumentFogIndices, using the output meanings and calculation rules below.
- Correct any reported input issue and run again. Before using a successful result, check the stated units, signs, reference scope and observation coverage.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| observedDocumentWords | Observed document words | list of number | Required |
| observedDocumentSentenceCounts | Observed document sentence counts | list of number | Required |
| independentlyFogEligibleComplexWordCounts | Independently fog eligible complex word counts | list of number | Required |
Use nonempty aligned per-document safe-integer word, sentence and eligible complex-word counts. Words and sentences must be positive; complex counts may be zero. Reject sentences>words or complex>words in any row. Compute each document's Fog index, then compute the pooled index from summed counts rather than averaging scores.
Fog_i=0.4(W_i/S_i+100C_i/W_i); pooledFog=0.4(ΣW/ΣS+100ΣC/ΣW) Use the matching field units and the exact boundary, ordering and reference rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| pooledGunningFogIndex | Pooled gunning fog index | number |
| individualDocumentFogIndices | Individual document fog indices; zero-based positions in the relevant supplied record or adjacent-pair list | list of number |

The caller performs segmentation, syllable classification and exclusions for eligible complex words. The pooled score is exposure-based, not mean document difficulty or a comprehension measure.
Missing required fields, unknown fields, wrong types and violated rules return input issues. Numeric values and outputs must be finite. Lists and matrices must be dense, without missing cells. Numeric lists allow at most 10000 entries; ordinary string lists allow at most 128 strings of 128 UTF-16 units each; numeric matrices allow at most 128 rows and 128 columns, subject to narrower requirements above.
