Industrial Design: Snap Fit Deflection Strain Explicit Geometry Tool

Evaluate the small-deflection uniform cantilever snap-fit outer-fiber strain approximation 3*t*delta/(2*L^2); no stress concentration, material limit or safety approval.

Loading tool…

Description

Return 1.5 × cantileverThickness × tipDeflection / length² as maximumSurfaceStrain.

A simple strain, compression, or neutral-axis formula models only part of a material's behavior. Geometry, loading, elasticity, and fatigue assumptions govern how the result can be used.

Return 1.5 × cantileverThickness × tipDeflection / length² as maximumSurfaceStrain.

When to use this tool

Use Industrial Design: Snap Fit Deflection Strain Explicit Geometry when you need one explicit deformation-model component.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter cantileverThickness, length, tipDeflection. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read result. Expand result to inspect the returned fields.

Require positive cantileverThickness and length and tipDeflection from zero through length/10. Return 1.5 × cantileverThickness × tipDeflection / length² as maximumSurfaceStrain.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • This small-deflection cantilever estimate is dimensionless; material limits, stress concentration, fatigue, nonlinear geometry, and safe snap-fit design are not evaluated.
  • Outputs are nested inside result. Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use validated material data and an appropriate mechanical analysis and test for safe design decisions.
