Description
Return referenceVolume × referencePressure × temperatureRatio/currentPressure and the inverse volume-scaling factor as compressionRatio.
Fish measurement models can apply basic physical scaling to supplied dimensions, speed, pressure, or temperature. The physical assumptions and quantity units determine the result; physiological behavior requires a separate model.
Return referenceVolume × referencePressure × temperatureRatio/currentPressure and the inverse volume-scaling factor as compressionRatio.
When to use this tool
Use Swimbladder Volume Depth Reference Term when you need an explicitly supplied physical component for a fish measurement record.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter referenceVolume, referencePressure, currentPressure, temperatureRatio. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read volume, compressionRatio. Use the output convention below.
Require nonnegative referenceVolume and positive referencePressure, currentPressure, and temperatureRatio. Return referenceVolume × referencePressure × temperatureRatio/currentPressure and the inverse volume-scaling factor as compressionRatio.1
For a fixed amount of ideal gas, pressure times volume divided by absolute temperature is constant. Applying that relation here assumes unchanged gas amount and the supplied absolute-temperature ratio; it does not model swimbladder physiology.2
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| referenceVolume | Reference Volume | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| referencePressure | Positive absolute pressure at the reference state. | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| currentPressure | Positive absolute pressure in the current state, in the same unit. | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| temperatureRatio | Positive current/reference absolute-temperature ratio, for example using kelvins. | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| volume | Volume | Required. Finite number. |
| compressionRatio | Current pressure divided by reference pressure and temperature ratio; inverse of the modeled volume multiplier. | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Pressures must be absolute on the same scale and temperatureRatio is current/reference absolute temperature. This ideal-gas term omits physiology, gas exchange, and safe ascent or animal-care judgments.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Check the physical assumptions and consult appropriate scientific or animal-care expertise for biological or welfare decisions.
