Fish Swimming Body Lengths Per Second Tool

Calculate fish swimming body lengths per second from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Loading tool…

Description

Return 100 × speed/bodyLength as bodyLengthsPerSecond and bodyLength/(10 × speed) as seconds for ten lengths.

Fish measurement models can apply basic physical scaling to supplied dimensions, speed, pressure, or temperature. The physical assumptions and quantity units determine the result; physiological behavior requires a separate model.

Return 100 × speed/bodyLength as bodyLengthsPerSecond and bodyLength/(10 × speed) as seconds for ten lengths.

When to use this tool

Use Fish Swimming Body Lengths Per Second when you need an explicitly supplied physical component for a fish measurement record.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter speedMetersPerSecond, bodyLengthCm. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read bodyLengthsPerSecond, timeForTenLengthsSeconds. Use the output convention below.

Require positive speedMetersPerSecond and bodyLengthCm. Return 100 × speed/bodyLength as bodyLengthsPerSecond and bodyLength/(10 × speed) as seconds for ten lengths.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Centimeters are explicitly converted to meters; this assumes constant speed and does not assess species-specific performance, fatigue, welfare, or swimming conditions.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check the physical assumptions and consult appropriate scientific or animal-care expertise for biological or welfare decisions.
