Survey Net Effort Unit Factor Tool

Calculate survey net effort unit factor from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Multiply nonnegative integer netCount by activeHours, subtract unavailableNetHours, and divide netHours by positive suppliedHoursPerEffortUnit.

Fisheries sampling effort can be expressed as net-hours, area-hours, or another declared survey unit. Exclusions and partial operation change the counted effort without automatically correcting catchability or sample bias.

Multiply nonnegative integer netCount by activeHours, subtract unavailableNetHours, and divide netHours by positive suppliedHoursPerEffortUnit.

When to use this tool

Use Survey Net Effort Unit Factor when you need a reproducible effort component under a supplied survey convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter netCount, activeHours, suppliedHoursPerEffortUnit, unavailableNetHours. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read netHours, convertedEffort. Use the output convention below.

Multiply nonnegative integer netCount by activeHours, subtract unavailableNetHours, and divide netHours by positive suppliedHoursPerEffortUnit.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Unavailable effort cannot exceed gross effort; net-hours and converted effort use the supplied reporting basis without standardizing catchability or survey design.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the complete survey design and suitable detection or catchability methods when estimating population abundance.
