Fish Sample Preservation Shrink Factor Tool

Separate caller-calibrated length and mass retention corrections; an isotropic mass-length relation is not imposed.

Description

Divide nonnegative preservedLength by positive originalRetention and preservedMass by positive massRetention.

Preservation can change specimen dimensions and mass. A retained/original factor describes a supplied correction assumption; applying it does not measure what happened to a particular specimen.

Divide nonnegative preservedLength by positive originalRetention and preservedMass by positive massRetention.

When to use this tool

Use Fish Sample Preservation Shrink Factor when you need to apply a documented preservation factor to an existing measurement.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter preservedLength, originalRetention, preservedMass, massRetention. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read correctedLength, correctedMass. Use the output convention below.

Divide nonnegative preservedLength by positive originalRetention and preservedMass by positive massRetention.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Retention values are multiplicative retained/original factors and are not capped at one; corrections rely on supplied preservation assumptions rather than specimen-specific measurements.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Retain the original observations and check specimen-specific preservation evidence and measurement uncertainty.
