Fish Mass Preservation Base Term Tool

Use an explicitly supplied preservation mass-retention factor; no taxon-specific correction is invented.

Description

Divide nonnegative preservedMass by suppliedRetainedFraction in (0, 1] for conditionalFreshMass and subtract nonnegative freshReference for referenceGap.

Preservation can change specimen dimensions and mass. A retained/original factor describes a supplied correction assumption; applying it does not measure what happened to a particular specimen.

Divide nonnegative preservedMass by suppliedRetainedFraction in (0, 1] for conditionalFreshMass and subtract nonnegative freshReference for referenceGap.

When to use this tool

Use Fish Mass Preservation Base Term when you need to apply a documented preservation factor to an existing measurement.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter preservedMass, suppliedRetainedFraction, freshReference. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read conditionalFreshMass, referenceGap. Use the output convention below.

Limitations and assumptions

  • All masses share one unit; the result is conditional on the supplied retention fraction, without estimating preservative effects or actual original mass.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Retain the original observations and check specimen-specific preservation evidence and measurement uncertainty.
