Fish Condition Relative Weight Reference Tool

Relative weight against an independently supplied length-specific reference mass, without selecting a species condition standard.

Description

Divide nonnegative observedMass by positive referenceMass for relativeWeight, multiply by 100 for percentReference, and subtract referenceMass for residualMass.

Fish morphometrics relate lengths, masses, ratios, and geometric components under stated measurement conventions. Standard, fork, and total lengths have distinct anatomical bases and should not be treated as interchangeable labels.

Divide nonnegative observedMass by positive referenceMass for relativeWeight, multiply by 100 for percentReference, and subtract referenceMass for residualMass.

When to use this tool

Use Fish Condition Relative Weight Reference when you need one explicit morphometric component using compatible supplied measurements.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter observedMass, referenceMass. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read relativeWeight, percentReference, residualMass. Use the output convention below.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Both masses share units; the reference is supplied and no species, length-based standard equation, or health interpretation is chosen.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check measurement landmarks, species-specific models, and uncertainty before interpreting biological condition or comparing samples.
