Fish Length Reference Offset Tool

Apply an independently supplied length correction without species norms or age inference.

Description

Add signed suppliedCorrection to nonnegative observedLength, require a nonnegative corrected result, and subtract nonnegative referenceLength for offset.

Fish morphometrics relate lengths, masses, ratios, and geometric components under stated measurement conventions. Standard, fork, and total lengths have distinct anatomical bases and should not be treated as interchangeable labels.

Add signed suppliedCorrection to nonnegative observedLength, require a nonnegative corrected result, and subtract nonnegative referenceLength for offset.

When to use this tool

Use Fish Length Reference Offset when you need one explicit morphometric component using compatible supplied measurements.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter observedLength, referenceLength, suppliedCorrection. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read correctedLength, offset. Use the output convention below.

Limitations and assumptions

  • All lengths share units; the correction and reference are supplied, without instrument calibration, anatomical conversion, or measurement-uncertainty analysis.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check measurement landmarks, species-specific models, and uncertainty before interpreting biological condition or comparing samples.
