Fish Length Truncated Tail Flag Tool

Retain an observed tail-completeness flag and only an independently supplied correction; no fish growth inference.

Description

Set lengthDefined when tailComplete or correctionKnown.

Fish morphometrics relate lengths, masses, ratios, and geometric components under stated measurement conventions. Standard, fork, and total lengths have distinct anatomical bases and should not be treated as interchangeable labels.

Set lengthDefined when tailComplete or correctionKnown.

When to use this tool

Use Fish Length Truncated Tail Flag when you need one explicit morphometric component using compatible supplied measurements.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter measuredLength, tailComplete, suppliedMissingLength, correctionKnown. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read lengthDefined, adjustedLength, truncated. Inspect lengthDefined, truncated before interpreting the associated values.

Set lengthDefined when tailComplete or correctionKnown. Return measuredLength for a complete tail, measuredLength plus suppliedMissingLength for a known correction, or adjustedLength zero as an undefined placeholder.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Lengths are nonnegative and use one unit; the correction is supplied, and no missing-tail size, anatomical convention, or biological condition is inferred.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check measurement landmarks, species-specific models, and uncertainty before interpreting biological condition or comparing samples.
