Description
Return their difference and total/standard when standard is positive, otherwise ratio zero and defined false.
Fish morphometrics relate lengths, masses, ratios, and geometric components under stated measurement conventions. Standard, fork, and total lengths have distinct anatomical bases and should not be treated as interchangeable labels.
Return their difference and total/standard when standard is positive, otherwise ratio zero and defined false.
When to use this tool
Use Fish Standard Total Length Gap when you need one explicit morphometric component using compatible supplied measurements.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter standardLength, totalLength. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read difference, ratio, defined. Inspect defined before interpreting the associated values.
Require totalLength at least nonnegative standardLength. Return their difference and total/standard when standard is positive, otherwise ratio zero and defined false.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| standardLength | Standard Length | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| totalLength | Total Length | Required. Finite number. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| difference | Difference | Required. Finite number. |
| ratio | Ratio on the numerator and denominator basis stated above. | Required. Finite number. |
| defined | Whether the associated ratio has its required denominator; inspect before using a zero placeholder. | Required. Boolean. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- The ratio's zero value is a placeholder; measurements must share units and conventions, and no species conversion or anatomical validation is performed.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Check measurement landmarks, species-specific models, and uncertainty before interpreting biological condition or comparing samples.
