Description

Sum nonnegative openings, subtract supplied overlappingArea, and subtract the resulting fraction of positive totalArea from one for coveredFraction.

Ideal water-storage and channel geometry uses dimensions, areas, and displacement fractions. Coherent length units determine areas and volumes; actual irregular geometry and hydraulic behavior require additional information.

Sum nonnegative openings, subtract supplied overlappingArea, and subtract the resulting fraction of positive totalArea from one for coveredFraction.

When to use this tool

Use Reservoir Cover Open Area Share when you need one explicit geometric component of a tank, bed, conduit, or channel.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter totalArea, openings, overlappingArea. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read openArea, coveredFraction. Use the output convention below.

Sum nonnegative openings, subtract supplied overlappingArea, and subtract the resulting fraction of positive totalArea from one for coveredFraction.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Overlap cannot exceed summed openings and net openings cannot exceed totalArea; geometry and multiple-overlap bookkeeping must already be resolved externally.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check the full surveyed geometry and the physical model before interpreting storage, capacity, or safe operation.
