Description

Multiply depthMm by areaKm2, coveredFraction in [0, 1], and 1000 for volumeM3.

Precipitation and evaporation records distinguish water depth, catchment area, volume, and observation duration. Converting among them requires coherent units and a clear measured or modeled basis.

Multiply depthMm by areaKm2, coveredFraction in [0, 1], and 1000 for volumeM3.

When to use this tool

Use Storm Hyetograph One Bin Volume Term when you need one explicit water-depth, volume, or accumulation component.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter depthMm, areaKm2, coveredFraction, durationMinutes. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read volumeM3, meanFlowM3PerSecond. Use the output convention below.

Multiply depthMm by areaKm2, coveredFraction in [0, 1], and 1000 for volumeM3. Divide by 60 times positive durationMinutes for meanFlowM3PerSecond.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
depthMmNonnegative interval precipitation depth in millimeters.Required. Finite number; minimum 0.
areaKm2Nonnegative contributing area in square kilometers.Required. Finite number; minimum 0.
coveredFractionCovered FractionRequired. Finite number; minimum 0; maximum 1.
durationMinutesPositive interval duration in minutes.Required. Finite number; strictly above 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
volumeM3Precipitation volume in cubic meters after the supplied covered fraction.Required. Finite number.
meanFlowM3PerSecondInterval volume divided by duration in seconds; not peak runoff.Required. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Depth and area are nonnegative; this is rainfall-volume accounting for one interval, not routed runoff, peak discharge, or a flood forecast.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check instrument records, unit conversions, temporal coverage, and a complete hydrologic model before interpreting runoff or water availability.
