Rainfall Intensity Duration Depth Factor Tool

Constant rainfall intensity integration and an explicit effective-runoff fraction.

Description

Multiply nonnegative intensityMmPerHour by durationMinutes/60 for depthMm and by runoffFraction in [0, 1] for effectiveDepthMm.

Precipitation and evaporation records distinguish water depth, catchment area, volume, and observation duration. Converting among them requires coherent units and a clear measured or modeled basis.

Multiply nonnegative intensityMmPerHour by durationMinutes/60 for depthMm and by runoffFraction in [0, 1] for effectiveDepthMm.

When to use this tool

Use Rainfall Intensity Duration Depth Factor when you need one explicit water-depth, volume, or accumulation component.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter intensityMmPerHour, durationMinutes, runoffFraction. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read depthMm, effectiveDepthMm. Use the output convention below.

Multiply nonnegative intensityMmPerHour by durationMinutes/60 for depthMm and by runoffFraction in [0, 1] for effectiveDepthMm.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Intensity is constant over the supplied duration; the runoff fraction is supplied, without infiltration, routing, or event-loss estimation.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check instrument records, unit conversions, temporal coverage, and a complete hydrologic model before interpreting runoff or water availability.
