Description

Multiply nonnegative depth by nonnegative area for volume.

Precipitation and evaporation records distinguish water depth, catchment area, volume, and observation duration. Converting among them requires coherent units and a clear measured or modeled basis.

Multiply nonnegative depth by nonnegative area for volume.

When to use this tool

Use Catchment Precipitation Area Term when you need one explicit water-depth, volume, or accumulation component.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter depth, area. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read volume. Use the output convention below.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use coherent length units so length times area gives volume; no implicit millimeter or square-kilometer conversion, runoff loss, or routing is included.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check instrument records, unit conversions, temporal coverage, and a complete hydrologic model before interpreting runoff or water availability.
