Radar Bin Time Coverage Factor Tool

Observed versus constant-rate full-bin equivalents, explicitly preserving coverage rather than silently filling observations.

Description

Multiply observedRate by coveredDuration and fullDuration, and return their duration ratio.

Coverage measures describe how much of a stated observation domain has supplied support. Pixel-count, time-weighted, and area-weighted shares answer different questions and need explicit denominators.

Multiply observedRate by coveredDuration and fullDuration, and return their duration ratio.

When to use this tool

Use Radar Bin Time Coverage Factor when you need a bounded weather-observation support component.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter observedRate, coveredDuration, fullDuration. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read observedIntegral, fullBinEquivalent, coveredFraction. Use the output convention below.

Require positive fullDuration and coveredDuration within it. Multiply observedRate by coveredDuration and fullDuration, and return their duration ratio.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Rate and duration units must combine consistently; fullBinEquivalent extrapolates the supplied rate across missing time and is not an observed full-bin total.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Keep observed coverage separate from extrapolated totals and assess missing-data mechanisms before filling gaps.
