Description
Multiply positive width by meanDepth for area and divide signed flow by that area for meanVelocity.
Flow calculations relate volume, time, cross-section, velocity, and supplied model parameters. A local ratio or contribution does not by itself solve a complete hydraulic system.
Multiply positive width by meanDepth for area and divide signed flow by that area for meanVelocity.
When to use this tool
Use Flow Depth Area Factor when you need one explicit flow component with coherent units and references.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter flow, width, meanDepth. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read area, meanVelocity. Use the output convention below.
Multiply positive width by meanDepth for area and divide signed flow by that area for meanVelocity.1

| meanDepth | Mean Depth | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| area | Area on the common unit basis stated above. | Required. Finite number. |
| meanVelocity | Mean Velocity | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Use coherent discharge and length units with a representative section-mean depth; no velocity profile, cross-section survey, or flow-regime assessment is performed.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use surveyed geometry, appropriate calibration, and a complete hydraulic model for operational or design decisions.
