Stream Cross Section Panel Area Tool

Trapezoidal wet panel area times caller-supplied signed panel-mean normal velocity.

Description

Average nonnegative leftDepth and rightDepth, multiply by nonnegative width for panel area, then multiply by signed meanVelocity for discharge.

Flow calculations relate volume, time, cross-section, velocity, and supplied model parameters. A local ratio or contribution does not by itself solve a complete hydraulic system.

Average nonnegative leftDepth and rightDepth, multiply by nonnegative width for panel area, then multiply by signed meanVelocity for discharge.

When to use this tool

Use Stream Cross Section Panel Area when you need one explicit flow component with coherent units and references.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter leftDepth, rightDepth, width, meanVelocity. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read area, discharge. Use the output convention below.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use coherent length and velocity units; this is one trapezoidal panel, without full-channel integration, velocity-profile correction, or survey uncertainty.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use surveyed geometry, appropriate calibration, and a complete hydraulic model for operational or design decisions.
