Seismic Polarity Convention Reflection Tag Tool

Explicit coefficient sign transformation, without assuming an SEG display or wavelet convention.

Description

Multiply by instrument sign and the selected compression-display sign and return positive, negative, or zero polarity.

A signal summary or transfer factor describes one numerical property of supplied measurements. Amplitude, power, offset removal, and normalization conventions differ, so a result needs its exact definition before physical interpretation.

Multiply by instrument sign and the selected compression-display sign and return positive, negative, or zero polarity.

When to use this tool

Use Seismic Polarity Convention Reflection Tag when you need a signal statistic or supplied-response factor.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter reflectionCoefficient, displayPositiveForCompression, instrumentSign. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read displayCoefficient, polarity. Use the output convention below.

Require reflectionCoefficient in [-1, 1] and instrumentSign +1 or -1. Multiply by instrument sign and the selected compression-display sign and return positive, negative, or zero polarity.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • This is a supplied display convention, not calculation of a reflection coefficient, actual instrument response, wavelet phase, or subsurface interpretation.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the full waveform and an appropriate calibrated processing method when phase, spectral content, instrument response, or uncertainty matters. Keep amplitude and power conventions separate.
