Geophysical Spatial Sampling Nyquist Margin Tool

Ideal band-limited Nyquist spacing condition; the equality boundary does not guarantee recovery of an unknown phase.

Description

Return twice spacing, half wavelength minus spacing, and resolves when spacing is at most half the wavelength.

Spatial sampling compares a signal's wavelength with measurement spacing. An ideal sampling threshold is a theoretical condition; finite coverage, phase, noise, and reconstruction method still affect what a survey can resolve.

Return twice spacing, half wavelength minus spacing, and resolves when spacing is at most half the wavelength.

When to use this tool

Use Geophysical Spatial Sampling Nyquist Margin when you need an explicit spacing or wavelength comparison.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter sampleSpacing, targetWavelength. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read nyquistWavelength, spacingMargin, resolves. Inspect resolves before interpreting the associated values.

Require positive sampleSpacing and targetWavelength. Return twice spacing, half wavelength minus spacing, and resolves when spacing is at most half the wavelength.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Lengths share units and equality passes this nominal check; two samples per wavelength do not guarantee reconstruction for every phase, field orientation, bandwidth, or sampling pattern.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Review the full acquisition and reconstruction design. Assess aliasing, finite aperture, noise, and instrument response instead of treating a single threshold as a guarantee of resolution.
