Description
Use exp(-hypot(wavenumberX,wavenumberY) × height) as factor and multiply both real and imaginary mode components by it.
Potential-field calculations describe local gravity or magnetic adjustments and spectral operations. Sign, vertical direction, and wavenumber convention affect the result; a single factor does not produce a complete corrected survey.
Use exp(-hypot(wavenumberX,wavenumberY) × height) as factor and multiply both real and imaginary mode components by it.
When to use this tool
Use Potential Field Upward Continuation Mode Factor when you need a local potential-field term with supplied coefficients or geometry.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter wavenumberX, wavenumberY, height, real, imaginary. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read factor, real, imaginary. Use the output convention below.
Require nonnegative height. Use exp(-hypot(wavenumberX,wavenumberY) × height) as factor and multiply both real and imaginary mode components by it.1
Upward continuation attenuates a Fourier mode by exp(-height times angular-wavenumber magnitude). This tool evaluates one mode, without an FFT, padding, or complete grid treatment.2
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| wavenumberX | Signed angular wavenumber in radians per height length unit. | Required. Finite number. |
| wavenumberY | Signed angular wavenumber in the same convention. | Required. Finite number. |
| height | Height in the common length unit and direction stated above. | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| real | Real | Required. Finite number. |
| imaginary | Imaginary | Required. Finite number. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| factor | exp(-height·hypot(kx,ky)); no extra 2π conversion is applied. | Required. Finite number. |
| real | Real | Required. Finite number. |
| imaginary | Imaginary | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Wavenumbers are angular spatial frequencies in radians per length unit matching height, not cycles per length. This is one Fourier mode under a planar continuation model, without transforming a field grid or validating source assumptions.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Process the complete survey using the intended reference model and correction chain. Check spectral conventions, boundary handling, and input units rather than combining isolated terms without their model context.
