Loss On Ignition Mass Gap Tool

Compare measured ignition mass change with an explicit reference; mass gains remain visible.

Description

Return before minus after as measuredLoss, and measuredLoss minus referenceLoss as residual.

Geochemical mass calculations distinguish wet sample, dry sample, ash, digest, and crucible-inclusive measurements. Moisture fractions and dilution factors change the reporting basis; they do not establish recovery, analyte retention, or laboratory accuracy.

Return before minus after as measuredLoss, and measuredLoss minus referenceLoss as residual.

When to use this tool

Use Loss On Ignition Mass Gap when you need an explicit sample-mass or concentration-basis calculation.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter beforeMass, afterMass, referenceLoss. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read measuredLoss, residual. Use the output convention below.

Require positive beforeMass and nonnegative afterMass. Return before minus after as measuredLoss, and measuredLoss minus referenceLoss as residual.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • All masses use the same unit. Gains produce negative loss; no percent conversion or attribution to water, carbon dioxide, oxidation, or a specific heating procedure is performed.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check the analytical preparation and measurement records for blanks, recovery, moisture, and mass basis. Use the laboratory's validated procedure for actual sample interpretation.
