Description
Subtract crucible mass for initial sample mass and compute loaded minus ignited as loss, then report 100 times loss divided by sample mass.
Geochemical mass calculations distinguish wet sample, dry sample, ash, digest, and crucible-inclusive measurements. Moisture fractions and dilution factors change the reporting basis; they do not establish recovery, analyte retention, or laboratory accuracy.
Subtract crucible mass for initial sample mass and compute loaded minus ignited as loss, then report 100 times loss divided by sample mass.
When to use this tool
Use Geochemical Loss On Ignition Basis when you need an explicit sample-mass or concentration-basis calculation.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter crucibleMass, loadedMass, ignitedMass. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read sampleMass, massLoss, loiPercent. Use the output convention below.
Require loadedMass greater than crucibleMass and ignitedMass at least crucibleMass. Subtract crucible mass for initial sample mass and compute loaded minus ignited as loss, then report 100 times loss divided by sample mass.1

} Limitations and assumptions
- All masses include the same crucible where applicable and share units. Mass gain produces a negative LOI percentage; no heating method, volatile identity, blank correction, or complete composition is validated.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Check the analytical preparation and measurement records for blanks, recovery, moisture, and mass basis. Use the laboratory's validated procedure for actual sample interpretation.
