Description

Return the assigned sum and observed minus assigned as unassigned minutes.

Survey display order, self-description, missingness, and record support are distinct research properties. Literal tokens and counts can preserve those distinctions without inferring a person's identity, preferences, or the meaning of an unprovided response.

Return the assigned sum and observed minus assigned as unassigned minutes.

When to use this tool

Use Time Use Category Unassigned Minutes when you need a transparent survey-record, display-order, or time-use calculation.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter observedMinutes, assignedMinutes. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read assignedTotal, unassigned. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative observedMinutes and assignedMinutes whose sum does not exceed observed time. Return the assigned sum and observed minus assigned as unassigned minutes.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Assigned categories must be nonoverlapping on the stated time basis for this subtraction to represent unassigned time. No identities, task classifications, survey completeness, or lived experience are inferred.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the study's consent, vocabulary, missingness, and disclosure methodology for interpretation. Retain self-described information and assess sampling and privacy separately from local record arithmetic.
