Description
Divide reference minus first by the selected pay, or return zero with defined false when that denominator is zero.
A pay-gap fraction compares two pay quantities on a chosen denominator and inclusion basis. Bonuses, work periods, hours, and population definitions can change the comparison; a descriptive ratio does not establish the cause of a difference.
Divide reference minus first by the selected pay, or return zero with defined false when that denominator is zero.
When to use this tool
Use Gender Studies: Paygap Denominator Convention Label when you need an explicit pay-comparison convention using supplied amounts.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter firstPay, referencePay, denominator. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read result. Expand result to inspect the returned fields.
Require nonnegative firstPay and referencePay and select denominator reference or first. Divide reference minus first by the selected pay, or return zero with defined false when that denominator is zero.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| firstPay | First Pay | Required. Finite number. |
| referencePay | Reference Pay | Required. Finite number. |
| denominator | Denominator | Required. Text; one of "reference", "first". Implementation limit: 8192 Unicode code points and 16384 UTF-16 code units. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| result | Object containing the calculated members; expand to inspect the fields below. | Required. Object. |
| result.gapFraction | (referencePay-firstPay)/selected denominator, or zero placeholder when defined is false. | Calculated result member: number. |
| result.defined | Whether the stated denominator or normalization exists; inspect before interpreting a zero placeholder. | Calculated result member: boolean. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- All pay values share currency and period; gapFraction is dimensionless, not percent. Choosing a denominator changes the convention, and the zero placeholder must be read with defined; no legal pay-gap standard is selected.
- Outputs are nested inside result. Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use the applicable statistical or reporting methodology for a full pay-gap analysis. Align currency, pay period, hours, population, and included compensation before interpreting the descriptive comparison.
