Stump Volume Loss Percent
Inventory stump frustum envelopes and loss fraction on explicitly accounted stump+delivered log volume; unmeasured tops/defects are excluded, not asserted total biological harvest loss.
Description
A stump frustum envelope can be accounted separately from delivered log volume.
A stump frustum envelope can be accounted separately from delivered log volume. The fraction's denominator determines which losses are represented.1
Inventory stump frustum envelopes and loss fraction on explicitly accounted stump+delivered log volume; unmeasured tops/defects are excluded, not asserted total biological harvest loss.
When to use Stump Volume Loss Percent
Use this tool to inventory stump frustum envelopes and loss fraction on explicitly accounted stump+delivered log volume; unmeasured tops/defects are excluded, not asserted total biological harvest loss.
Gather the tree inventory, plot measurements or model parameters. Check diameter, area, time and moisture conventions; keep paired observations aligned.
How to use Stump Volume Loss Percent and understand its results
- Gather the tree inventory, plot measurements or model parameters. Check diameter, area, time and moisture conventions; keep paired observations aligned.
- Enter stumpHeightsM, groundDiametersM, cutDiametersM, deliveredLogVolumesM3 using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read stumpEnvelopeVolumeM3, stumpFractionOfStumpPlusDeliveredVolume. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| stumpHeightsM | Stump heights m | list of number | Required |
| groundDiametersM | Ground diameters m | list of number | Required |
| cutDiametersM | Cut diameters m | list of number | Required |
| deliveredLogVolumesM3 | Delivered log volumes m3 | list of number | Required |
Pair nonnegative stump heights, ground/cut diameters in meters and delivered log m³. Sum frustum volumes, require positive stump-plus-delivered total and return stump m³ and its fraction of that accounted total.
Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.
stump volume=Σπheight(ground diameter²+ground diameter × cut diameter+cut diameter²)/12 Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| stumpEnvelopeVolumeM3 | Stump envelope volume m3 | number |
| stumpFractionOfStumpPlusDeliveredVolume | Stump fraction of stump plus delivered volume | number |

} Limitations and assumptions
Unmeasured tops, defects and other biological volume are excluded. The result is not total harvest loss.
Numeric inputs and returned numeric values must be finite; an unrepresentable returned value produces an error. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Deadwood Volume: Inventory exact frustum log envelopes, hollow exclusions and caller decay-adjusted solid volume separately; not a standalone Huber/Smalian/Newton or bark-volume alias, and cavity/taper assumptions are explicit. For a complementary task, use Defect Deduction Percent Gross Scale: Deduct separately declared mutually exclusive volume defects by measured log segment and conserve gross/net inventory; overlapping causes must not be double counted and no regional commercial scaling rule is embedded.
