Deadwood Volume

Inventory exact frustum log envelopes, hollow exclusions and caller decay-adjusted solid volume separately; not a standalone Huber/Smalian/Newton or bark-volume alias, and cavity/taper assumptions are explicit.

Description

Deadwood volume can separate an outer envelope, hollow exclusion and remaining solid fraction.

Deadwood volume can separate an outer envelope, hollow exclusion and remaining solid fraction. End-diameter frustums are an explicit taper model for that inventory.1

Inventory exact frustum log envelopes, hollow exclusions and caller decay-adjusted solid volume separately; not a standalone Huber/Smalian/Newton or bark-volume alias, and cavity/taper assumptions are explicit.

When to use Deadwood Volume

Use this tool to inventory exact frustum log envelopes, hollow exclusions and caller decay-adjusted solid volume separately; not a standalone Huber/Smalian/Newton or bark-volume alias, and cavity/taper assumptions are explicit.

Gather the tree inventory, plot measurements or model parameters. Check diameter, area, time and moisture conventions; keep paired observations aligned.

How to use Deadwood Volume and understand its results

  1. Gather the tree inventory, plot measurements or model parameters. Check diameter, area, time and moisture conventions; keep paired observations aligned.
  2. Enter logSegmentLengthsM, outerEndDiametersM, hollowEndDiametersM, remainingSolidVolumeFractions using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read grossEnvelopeVolumeM3, hollowCorrectedSolidVolumeM3, decayAdjustedRemainingSolidVolumeM3. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
logSegmentLengthsMLog segment lengths mlist of numberRequired
outerEndDiametersMOuter end diameters mlist of list of numberRequired
hollowEndDiametersMHollow end diameters mlist of list of numberRequired
remainingSolidVolumeFractionsRemaining solid volume fractionslist of numberRequired

Pair nonnegative lengths with exactly two outer and hollow end diameters per segment, all nonnegative and hollow≤outer at each end. Use remaining fractions in [0,1]; return gross, hollow-corrected and decay-adjusted m³ totals.

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

frustum m³=πlength(d1²+d1d2+d2²)/12; remaining=(outer−hollow) × solid fraction

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Irregular cavities and taper can violate the ideal model. Solid fractions are supplied rather than measured by the tool.

Numeric inputs and returned numeric values must be finite; an unrepresentable returned value produces an error. Matrices are limited to 128 rows and 128 entries per row; other numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Defect Deduction Percent Gross Scale: Deduct separately declared mutually exclusive volume defects by measured log segment and conserve gross/net inventory; overlapping causes must not be double counted and no regional commercial scaling rule is embedded. For a complementary task, use Stump Volume Loss Percent: Inventory stump frustum envelopes and loss fraction on explicitly accounted stump+delivered log volume; unmeasured tops/defects are excluded, not asserted total biological harvest loss.
